With the recent drop in costs of solar, California is one place where, when tax credits are considered, solar is now near grid parity. That was the place that all solar pundits wanted the industry to get to before it took off…and the low prices are promising to stay for a long time given the huge over-supply situation that the market faces.
Its going to be interesting to see how some companies which hope to start manufacturing solar panels in the USA will carve out a niche for themselves, or distinguish themselves through unique strategies. The market is not seeming to be able to absorb all of the capacity anytime soon, and as we saw with Solyndra, even having a huge pipeline doesn’t mean you’ll survive. You have to own a pipeline at a price which is not adjustable to market realities, and if you can find that pipeline today, you can probably also sell them a piece of land in Florida…
