Now some sense is coming to our industry! GE has figured out that its not just the cost of the solar panels, which can be brought down just a wee bit more before hitting a critical point, but its the balance of systems that must be reduced, and the onsite labor time.
So they are embarking on a path to $3 per watt by 2015, with the first stop being $4.50 per watt in 2012. Frankly, I think a lot of people are already there, but most are near $5. The roofs on commercial buildings are now being put up for about $2.90 per watt so most of what GE is working on will target residential consumers.
There’s also word out again that GE might look at First Solar as a takeover target? Well at the current market cap being one third of its height, perhaps this is the time to be shopping for bargains before consolidation drives the values back up?

What a great goal. GE is doing the right thing by setting a goal to lessen the expense of solar power.
