The City of San Diego welcomed the first all electric car sharing service in North America.
Car2go, a venture owned by Daimler Benz, is the first such service with multiple locations in Europe already offering these cars. Basically, you drop off an electric car at a charging station, and its picked up by the next user, with a PIN security system. With smarphone apps, they’ve made this a seamless approach to replacing taxis and for those who don’t wish to pay for a car full time or have no such need.
I wonder if taxis will go the way of the dinosaur in those places where you can pick up your own car and drop it off at your destination for the next person to use.
It is recognition of the fact that electric cars are today “city cars” because of their lower range. As we move towards faster charging and longer ranges, that will surely change.
