Ever wonder how to harness a culture of excellence in your company or organization? This article hits home in the distinctive nature of an organization which chooses “excellence”.
All too often, we are led to believe that superficial congeniality within a group will lead to peace and prosperity. I believe that this is false, more likely leading to short term truce, and eventual poverty.
A culture of excellence, as defined by a common strategy, thread or objective within a group, will differ in its structure from one organization to another, with several dependencies as the basis for those differences. Yet what they will all have in common is leadership which will communicate and educate all the members in what the common vision is, and empower/structure the teams to be able to achieve excellence and avoid mediocrity. Excellence is not ever achieved accidentally, and mediocrity is all too often acceptable to those who do not dare to go beyond.
Deepak Choprah says ” Pursue excellence, ignore success”. I believe he does so because in the pursuit of excellence, success will come as a by-product. A while back someone I know told me that “mediocrity is OK”. Sorry my dear friend, it is not. Not for Jack Welch of GE. Not for Deepak Chopra. And dare I say, not for any corporation which hopes to be a leader in its industry.
We all make choices for ourselves, rooted in a belief system of what we think is right. On this Father’s day, I keep coming back to what I think would make my daughter and sons most proud, and how my actions will act as teacher, when I pretend that they are sitting on my shoulder…
